Edit
I went to my first conference about a year after I was diagnosed. I was receiving Botox but the dosage was so low I could barely keep my eyes open. I felt desperate and decided to go to St. Louis alone. I was nervous and knew no one but after being there a short time, I realized that I was among friends, many of whom were as bad off as I was. I learned a lot; got some good information and advise. When I returned home, I decided to switch doctors and make it possible to meet with other patients. There wasn't a support group in northern Virginia, where I lived, so I started one. Reaching out to others was the best way to forget about myself and being nervous. Ten years later, I'm still involved in doing what I can to help other patients.
Try to go to the conference. Meet the folks on the bulletin board and many other patients, as well as some of the doctors whose names you read about in the newsletter. You won't regret it.
