Hi everyone, I'm new to the BB so forgive me if I bring up any topics already discussed...I'm a smoker(yes addicted without a doubt). I've had BEB for 3 years now, a while back I stayed off cigarettes for 33 days, my Botox was overdue and I was having a bad time with spasms when I quit smoking by day 3 the spasms were gone and did not return until 2 days after I picked up smoking again 30 plus days later( Ihad no Botox during my quit time and as I said it was overdue..none for 4-plus monthsand the sx's were bad prior to quitting)..I wish, I could stay off the cigs for good...Any feedback??? |

Hello: I have smoked since I'm 15 & am 53 now. I doubt very much that smoking has anything to do with BEB. I am the first person in my famiy (ever) to have BEB & some of them smoked & still do. I just got the BEB when I was 52, so all those other years I didn't have BEB. Seems like most of the people on this board don't smoke and they have it, so I don't think it's part of the problems. Probably just coincidence that you didn't spasms for that time. Some people do have short-lived recessions. I'm sure others will reply too. Take care, Sally in South Carolina. |

I've never smoked but when I have been around cigarette smoke, I find that it is very irritating to my eyes.
No, it did not cause my blepharospasm but knowing how it effects my eyes, I tend to stay as far away from it as possible. Smoke is definitely an eye irritant(not to mention what it does to your lungs and mouth and throat). Anything that is an irritant to the eyes can be a trigger for blepharospasm if you are pre-disposed to it. If you are constantly around the smoke of cigarettes, it could effect your eyes enough to cause Blepharospasm (it would be termed Secondary Blepharospasm) and might possibly go away when the irritant was removed. Shirley in New Mexico who wishes that you could stay away from the cigarettes for good, too. Keep trying... |

Thanks for the feedback and encouragement to keep working on quitting. Smoke is certainly an eye irritant...and nicotine is a toxin( a poison in fact). I tell myself that every time I light up, so I'm trying not to light up. The less I smoke the better my eyes feel. I sometimes wonder if toxins in our environments are linked to BEB, maybe nicotine for me, and something else for another. There is still alot to be researched and so much we don't know about toxins and how they relate to our nerve cells/BEB. It is certainly a complex disorder; and I am curious(nosy) by nature. Thanks again toShirley and all for the feedback....Denise G. in NC... |

Speaking of toxins, we are pumping ourselves every 8 weeks or so with botox, one of the worst toxins of them all. I find that kind of ironic, but at least it's a helpful one for us for now...who knows what it will lead to inside of us later on in life! I guess we need to use it & live for the moment. In and of itself, there is nothing wrong with nicotine (aside from the fact that it's extraordinarily addictive). The delivery method is the danger. In fact, nicotine is potentially 'good' for BEB sufferers. See the BEBRF newsletter, Volume 24, Number 2. The Q and A addresses nicotine patches. |

I don't smoke, never have but grew up in a smoking household.
Sorry to sound so blunt but Hello.....your eyes are better when you don't smoke! My advise to you is to try it again. You have nothing to loose and everything to gain. Catherine |

I wouldn't believe that smoking-not/smoking is directly related to blepharospasm, except that smoke could irritate your eyes. But how about this thought...Everyone agrees that BEB is adversely affected by stress...right? I find that when I have things under control in my life, or feel that I do, my confidence level goes way up....and my stress level goes way down. When that happens, my eyes stay open. So....Maybe when you are finding that you are successfully controlling your urge to smoke, your confidence level goes up, your stress level drops, and that helps your eyes to stay open. ????? I stopped smoking many years ago...long before my BEB started.

I was never told by an MD there was a link. Personally, I do not think there IS a link. |
