Today I had my botox injections in Houston (Baylor/Parkinson and Movement Disorder Clinic).
Thank you to the person who had mentioned on this board, some months ago, that there was an optometrist in the building here (this should have been obvious to me, but I didn't think of it!) I arrived early and decided to go take a look-- found a pair of Cocoons that had already been tinted: 80% density FL41 tint on brown polarized lenses (ie, these are dark--for outdoors). I like them! Can wear these over my clear prescription glasses. I have already 3-4 pair of ordinary Cocoons, and they all have stiff plastic frames. Maybe everyone else noticed this already, but I hadn't--that the newer ones have flexible endpieces (you can adjust for fit over your ears). The person in the optometrist's--it's Christy's--said I could find Cocoons cheaper on the internet or elsewhere (I knew this, but appreciated his mentioning it), and send those glasses to them--or send any glasses--and they'd put the tint on. $75 is a little pricey (I paid $30 or $35 when I had mine tinted by the Moran Eye Institute; but then, that was in August 2005, maybe it's more expensive now). Anyway, thought I would mention this. Judith K |

Judith: I see cocoon sunglasses in fishing magazines and they look like the ones in Shoppers Drug Mart here in Canada that sell for around $25.00. I'm sure yours are better quality.I'm going to ask my optometrist if he sells them and about FL 41 tint. Not sure what that is. Can you educate me? Thanks Betty |

They don't have to be Cocoon brand glasses-- this optometrist I mentioned (and there are others) will put the tint on Cocoon-type glasses that you provide, on goggles, on your regular RX glasses (as long as they don't have a coating, like a non-glare coating). The glasses you've seen in fishing magazines for $25 may well be just as good quality as the ones I bought yesterday for $55--you buy things in a shop that's in a high-rise building of a medical center, you (or I) expect the price may be more. But $55 is what my optometrist at home also charges. However, I got my original ones on sale from him for $25. I am sure you can find good quality ones for $25 or maybe less. I was just so excited to find a pair that was ready-to-go that I went ahead and bought them.
FL41 is a sort of rose-colored tint. It can be made lighter (maybe around 30% density, for indoors) or darker (75-80%, for outdoors) or whatever you request. Many people find it helps with light-sensitivity (though the bottom line is to get sunglasses with polarized lenses), and that's why I like them--because the light-sensitivity sets off the blinking problem for me. I think I recall hearing/reading that the FL41 tint was developed for people with migraine, and then was found to help BEB people also. Another thing: there is a certain wave-length of light that is irritating to people with BEB, and FL41 apparently screens out some of that. (Not everyone is as enthusiastic about this tint as I am, and some have not been helped by it.) The optometrist I saw yesterday at Christy's said that people who have nothing at all wrong with their eyes have also been requesting that tint, because they find it especially soothing. You can do an internet search and read about FL 41 tint. Judith K Modified by judith k at Wed, Jan 09, 2008, 23:22:38 |

Thanks Judith! I like and appreciate your explanation. I'm going to print this out so I'll remember and quiz my optometrist for my upcoming appointment. I may also get the ones in the drugstore to leave in the car. Betty |

Hi Judith, As I posted in another thread I got back from getting botox today at the Moran Eye Center in Salt Lake. I also stopped in to get FL-41 lenses put in some frames. The frames were Bolle' sunglasses that fit better than anything they had because they covered better, were larger lenses and curved around the sides better. But the cost of the just the new lenses at 80% were about 85.00 No RX. And then they are going to put an anti-glare coating on them for $75.00 This was all with a 30% discount because I had purchased glasses there before. But after reading your post (and getting information from them before on FL-41) I have to double check and make sure they do the anti-glare coating because I remember now from your post that they can't put FL-41 on over original clear glasses that have anti-glare coating. Thanks for reminding us of this. I will also let everyone know what I find out on this. Have a good day,

--thanks Norm, it's interesting that Moran is charging so much more now than it did in 2005 for the FL41 tint. Maybe that's because when I gave them my 2 pair of glasses in 2005 and was charged 30-35 per pair, it was at the blepharospasm conference which was held in Park City, near Salt Lake City, that year. Possibly Moran were giving a special deal to conference participants, or maybe the price was just cheaper then.
Look forward to hearing what new information you find out. Judith K |

Thought I would report that after calling practicaly all eye glass companies trying to get the FL 41 tint in Toronto Canada area last fall, I finally found a lab at Hakim optical at Square One, Mississauga that would do it with the BPI registered tint. I had glasses with a 80% and 35% FL 41 tint made up with a base gray tint as well. In general I am happy with the FL 41 tint and it has made a diffrence in my condition. I noticed that indoors the 35% red tone wasn't as pleasant as I was hoping and so I asked the Lab technician to make me an additional pair with 20% FL 41 tint. I'm very happy with these and practically wear them all the time indoors. Friends who put them on say they are very soothing. I haven't heard of anyone using this low level but it may be worth considering. I find these glasses help me more in sunlight but also help with any harsh lighting indoors. If anyone in the Toronto area is interested the contact at Hakim Optical is John at 905-896-9900. They have a lab on site and know the correct way of making these tints. |
