1 week ago I had injections , my Dr. switched me from botox to myobloc. The first three days werem great, on thr fourth day I woke up to what felt like a handfull of grit in each eye, it stayed thst way all day The next day was the same. This morning is much better. My wife put ointnent in the eyes and then hot compress, it has helped with the grit. For those of you that have used both botox and myobloc does this sound like a normal progression. Appreciate all the info I can get. Thanks Bob

The "grit feeling" is probably due to dry eyes. Botox or Myobloc can cause or worsen a dry eye condition. When the Botox or Myobloc begins to work to relax those eye muscles, it also can cause an un-natural blink response (less blinking or incomplete blinking to spread the tear film properly). It is a very common side-effect and can last for days to weeks to months. Everybody is different.

As your lid muscles weaken from the toxin, they may not close completely at night, which can dry things out even further.

Use of eye drops, gels and/or ointments has become a daily part of most of our eye routines. The oilier drops and ointments and gels can blur the vision for varying amounts of time. Lid scrubs and warm, moist compresses are also used as well as covering the eyes at night with anything from saran wrap to various eye masks to eye goggles.

Preservative-free drops are usually indicated when lubricating drops must be used frequently and long term as the preservatives can cause eye irritation in some people. Some of us use drops every 30 minutes...sometimes 3 or 4 times a day. It will vary depending on the severity of your dry eye problem at any given time.

The ingredients in Eye drops vary and some are oilier and longer lasting than others. There are many on the market and it's a matter of trial and error to find what works best for each individual.

If left untreated, that gritty feeling can turn into a painful, corneal abrasion which will require medical attention quickly.

You're doing good by using a bit of ointment and the warm compresses. Get some preservative-free individual vials of lubricating eye drops and use them every 30 minutes or so. Most have replaceable caps and can be used several times even though they are labeled as "single use vials". I'll hang on to them for 24 hours and then toss if an opened vial hasn't been used up by then. Always wash your hands first and keep things as clean and sanitary as possible.
Start covering your eyes at night...at least for a time.

Hope this helps a bit.

Shirley--you taught me something today. I did not know I could push the lid back on my single use vial of eye drops. I would add that the ophthamologist gave me a small blue holder (made by Allergan) so the opened ones can be put in the refrigerator. It holds them straight up so they are not touching anything else. I put my holder in a very small plastic refrigerator dish (without lid) for stability. I, too use for 24 hours. Doc did tell me to not save the drops if I am out traveling and do not have the refrigeration for several hours. At that time I use the bottle drops.

Significant worsening of dry eye somewhere into the first week of Myobloc is exactly my experience. Much more noticeable than anything that happened after Botox.

In my case it lasts a couple of days then settles down to a more normal level of dry eye after that - so hopefully you will do better again quite soon

Cheers

Peter

I've only ever had botox injections. But this time (after over 14 years) I've had more pain than I've ever experienced before in the eyes and I'm going into my 5th week after the injections now!. The eyes are NOT dry (confirmed by eye doctor) but I still constantly use preservative-free drops. The only relief I've found this time around is to use the moisture goggles at night and during the day I find just a plain, clean, face cloth placed in cool water really helps. Better days ahead for us all. June in Toronto

June, I wonder if our dr. has lost his touch, you are having all this trouble and my right eye is still only half open after 5 weeks. The left one is great.well at least I can see with one eye. Judy
