Forehead/Eyebrow Muscle Spasms

I am curious to know if anyone has had problems with the muscles that control the forehead/eyebrows - (I don't know how to describe what I mean other than by saying my eyebrows are almost always if not always in a deep frowning position). I have only had the Botox injections twice so far....so I am new at this.

The first time I had the Botox the opth. injected my top and bottom lids - outside corners of my eyes and also some around my eyebrows...including one shot right between my eyebrows at the top of my nose. When I went the second time (last Thursday) she asked me how the Botox worked....I told her it was pretty good except for the heavy feeling in my nose. Because of this she did not put any Botox in between my brows on top of my nose. The problem is...this last lot of injections really did not do anything. I still have the squinting. I am just wondering because of the outcome - if maybe my problem is in the eyebrow/forehead area more - rather than in the eyelids. I would appreciate it if you could let me know if anyone else has had this experience. I realize this is rather long - but I could not figure out a way to shorten it. Thanks for your help.

I've had botox injections for over 17 years and always get two of them inbetween the eyebrows but above the nose. The units of botox are more at those two locations than the others (I also get them on the outside corners and around the eyebrows). Sorry I can't be more specific about units, etc. it's been a very long time since I asked for a diagram of my injections as botox works quite well for me and the neurologist uses the same locations each time. Thanks for your reply June. Just wondering if you started out with an ophthalmologist and then went to a neurologist for the botox treatment. I am having my injections done by an ophthalmologist.......only due to the fact that my regular ophthalmologist sent me to her. I notice that you are from Toronto ....... I am just a few short miles north of you.

Initially, as a lot of people have, it took 2 years of going to my GP, an opthalmologist and a neurologist (all of whom didn't diagnose anything other than "stress") before I eventually went to my husband's neurologist (he's retired long ago). He diagnosed BEB straight away, put me on meds which didn't help, and then sent me to Dr. Earl Consky, movement disorder neurologist who is now located at Bay/College. He gave me my first botox injections and has continued for over 17 years - I lucked out with him for sure.

Where are you located "a few short miles north of me"? Are you aware of the Toronto BEB Foundation (BEBCRF)? We have a website www.blepharospasm.ca but not a bulletin board like this, which is invaluable. There is also a support group meeting (bi-annual) on Sunday, May 1st at 1.30-3.30 in the North York Civic Centre (5100 Yonge St)if you are able to join us. I've left my e-mail with this post if you have any questions or I can help (put BEB in the subject line). Best wishes. June in Toronto

Hi Donnar--

I have problems with frowning appearance from BEB also. My current doc (neurologist) gives me one shot between the eyebrows, but any relief I get from this is short-lived. My ophtalmologist used to give me two shots: one at the inside edge of each eyebrow. That worked much better.

Does your squinting seem to originate above the eye or below? I have a lot of squinting which seems to originate below the eye. The treatment for that has not improved things much and I frankly don't know why not. Next time I go for shots, I'll ask specifically which of the shots are for squinting.

Good luck to you in getting all of this to the point where you have relief long enough to make it between injection periods.

Joellen

Hi Joellen.. thanks for your reply.

My squinting seems to be right in the area of my eyebrows above the eyes -

Donnar.

Yes, in addition to eyelid spasms, I get spasms across my forehead, almost like a bulging skin/muscle unibrow but slightly above the actual brow line.

My neuros used to give me injections in the upper and lower eyelids, between the brows, above the brows, in the temple areas, and clear up in the corners of my forehead by the hairline.

Unfortunately, 10 years and 3 injectors couldn't get a sufficient result with the Botox for me. But it's at least worth trying if you think you might have issues across your forehead.

This area above the nose, between the eyebrows, is what my neurologist tells me every visit is the most important placement ... It is my inability to remember words that I can't tell you the muscle he names (corrugator?) because he emphasizes this to me at every appointment, has increased the dosage to this area, as well as my upper lids, and I am now getting my best results. (I get 2 shots in this area)

Hi Andrea....thanks for your reply.

Just wondering if you have any (what I would describe) as a heavy feeling or soreness in your nose area after the injections. Or in between the time of your next sheduled injections.

Thanks....Donnar

no, I do not recall experiencing this...

I used to get a scrunching of the nose (bunny nose) when I did NOT get these injection sites. I went to an opthalmologist who gave me injections in the eye lids only and during that time, I did get the scrunchy/bunny nose.

That "deep frowning spasm" is quite common for many of us with blepharospasm. Depending on where this actually is and how your doctor chooses to inject, you might get injections in the forehead, above the brow area (inner and outer aspect) or between the brows (somewhat above the nose). All these areas might be injected for what you are talking about.

I'm not really certain why you are experiencing pain in your nose area from injections between your brows.

The "fullness/heaviness" sensation might be related to sinus congestion or allergy like symptoms. This side effect does occasionally occur from botox. If this is the case, you might try an over the counter nasal spray called Nasalcrom before your next set of injections and also use it for a couple of days after. Nasalcrom helps to block an allergic response if used prior to being exposed to the allergen.

Other sinus medications might also help with this nose heaviness sensation.

Hope that this helps a little. If this nose sensation lasted for a prolonged amount of time (months), it may not even be related to the botox.

Hi Shirley, Thanks for the information. I am going to check out the Nasalcrom next time I am at the drug store.

Donna, Shirley told me about Nasalcrom many years ago when I had sinus allergies after botox - it worked for me and I hope it does for you as well. June in Toronto
