For various reasons I'm thinking of changing doctors and insurance. I currently pay a "patient portion" of the charge for Botox. My question is under some insurance companies i.e. United Health Care do some of you pay nothing? Thanks,

Hi LeAnn, With United Health Care HMO and SecureHorizons by UHC, in Arizona, I only paid my $30 copay to see the neurologist, and nothing for the Botox. When I had Cigna HMO, it was the same way. According to my retiree literature, it appears the United Healthcare PPO pays percentages, 80% in- or 60% out-of-network. Tatia

United is my "Medigap" insurer. (My primary is Medicare, of course.) I always have to pay a co-pay. It's not a lot, but I've never heard of anyone paying "nothing." Unless, of course, the pharmaceutical company has a program like Merz. And even that isn't forever. Good luck.

LeAnn, Medicare alone pays 80% of the fee that Medicare approves, no news there. Part B Medicare supplement plans usually cover some of the remaining 20%. As you no doubt know, there are lots of options in the selection of Part B programs. Some cover more than others, so the answer to your question is yes, all of it can be covered, if you choose the particular part B plan that does that. That's the one I am on. I send United Healthcare lots of money each month for the privilege, but in return my Botox (or Xeomin etc) sessions cost me nothing out of pocket. Cheers Peter |

Peter & All, Having spent all yesterday morning double and triple checking my Medicare, Medigap choices with Aetna (which includes Rx), I had the distinct feeling that my mind had departed and my wish was to go up in the mountains and find a cave to live in. Does anyone have coverage through Aetna, so that I might know what to expect? Botox at the end of this month. Judy

Judy, I would think...like Peter was saying....that it probably depends on your particular policy. I doubt that you will be out of pocket $$$$ very much. Medicare will pick up 80% of what they allow and then you and your Aetna will be picking up the other 20% of that allowance. Depending on your particular Aetna policy, you might be paying a co-pay or nothing or maybe 10% with Aetna picking up the other 10%. Depending on where you get your injections, you might get a bill from the facility and the physician or just one bill if it is a private physicians office. My out of pocket expenses with Medicare and UHC are approximately $80 for the total of two bills...one from the medical center and one from my physician....with me paying 10% of what Medicare allows and UHC picking up 10%. LeAnn, I have Medicare, which pays 80% of Medicare approved costs. I also have AARP UnitedHealthcare for my Medigap policy. The particular plan I chose has no deductible (which means I don't pay a Medicare or Medigap deductible)and no co-pays. It's pretty pricey at $225/mo. I have TWO rare disorders and bad knees. So far, it has been a good choice. The Medigap policy also pays for my monthly gym membership (Silver Sneakers)and if you subtract the $40/mo. I save on the gym membership, the Medigap policy costs me about $185/mo. That makes it a real bargain with no deductibles or co-pays. Glynda in Houston, TX |

I also am on Medicare and have United........but appararently there are many different programs. I have never paid a dime (except my monthly premium...........$172.50................)But I've never paid any doctor anything!! Check around and good luck, Sandi |
