I need to get new varifocals for indoor and outdoor use. I have read up on F41 tints but cannot find much information about the depth of tint people have gone for. eg 30% indoors/ 60% outdoors. Any information would be really useful as I do not want to make an expensive mistake. PS My experience of opticians etc( eye doctors) in UK is that most seem not to have had any experience of blepharospasm so I am trying to get all the information before I have an eye test |

My tint is 50%. I love my glasses. I was getting injections regularly every 3 months and one time had to have them sooner because the spasms were so bad. My Neuro-Optho talked to me about trying the FL-41's and of course I agreed immediately. Wonderful story - I did not have injections again for 2 1/2 years. I got injections again almost a year ago and am doing well. When you get the tint, they won't put in scratch coating or any other on top because that way they can adjust the tint. They can deepen it if needed or take it off and lighten it. I only pain $35.00 extra for my tints. The dr. said it was kind of a guessing game about the tint so we went to the 50% as a beginning place and it worked! Best Wishes and Blessings!

Hi, I hope I won't confuse things if I say that "mistake" may be much too strong a word to use. Whether you get 35% or 50% intensity for indoors (not SUCH a huge difference, not like 35% vs 60%), neither will be a disaster. Both will be useful.
So, it seems to me, cost remains as the determining factor. No one wants to waste money, but I've never felt I've made a 'mistake' because of using 35% or 50%—all have their uses; and to an extent may be interchangeable. I find that using FL41 for reading (it depends so much on the light) is different from using them to watch movies in a theater. (I have one tint on reading glasses and another on ones with transitional lenses). But SOME degree of FL41 is better than none, and both would have their uses. Like Possi, I paid $35 for the tint. (I'm surprised to hear about any FL41 tint making such a dramatic difference!)
What might be more of a concern (or, for me, it is now) is whether the lenses had the slightly orange tint vs the rose tint.
You might experience no difference at all between the two, or prefer one or the other. Since this will be your first pair—I'd go for getting an old pair tinted (I almost always do that) and see what you like. Or get a new pair that is nice but as inexpensive as possible. Good luck! Judith K

Thanks for the tips. I wear varifocals and usually also have a pair tinted for outdoor use. I think, if my prescription is similar when I get an eyetest, I will get my present glasses tinted to see how it works out, rather than the new ones. I also have cervical dystonia and to date have not found any relief with Botox so I am getting a bit desperate as I am effectively blind at times as my head is forward and my eyes closed. I also find that indoors I have my glasses pushed back on my hair as I do not see as well with them. Similarly when I read, I have them off. Not sure if it is because they are varifocals and my head is moving so I am not seeing properly with them. Do you have this experience with your blepharospasm? Or might it be because I have the two conditions? Anyway thank you for your responses. |

I don't know about the last question. I have just recently developed Cervical Dystonia. Right now my eyes are spasming terribly, along with my face and neck. I am scheduled for injections next Monday because my dr. is out of town but his secretary said they would get me in with someone else if I need it. As far as the color, my lens are kind of an orangy pink and they work great cutting the blue rays. I am a patient at one of the best eye clinics in the country and I am very thankful. When I went to Mayo, they told me I couldn't live any where better in the country for eye care. What a blessing! Just as I say how well I am doing, Dystonia hit me with a bang. When I was in the Rheumatologist office this a.m., my eyes completely spasmed shut and my face was drooping and drawn until they questioned me to be sure I had not had a stroke. I reassured them that this is not new to me. One thing, about the time without injections; my dr. prayed for me each time asking God that the injections last a full year. I will always believe that my remission was an answer to prayer. This dystonia stuff is not for sissies. Adding the pain of the cervical dystonia to my Ankylosing Spondylitis, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Lupus has really tested my patience. Blessings.

I had problems with my progressives and bifocals. It was if my eyes didn't seem to coordinate. So, I had my prescriptions checked twic a year apart. It seems that my astigmatism that I had had for decades had suddenly disappeared. So, I no longer need progressives or bifocals, just reading glasses. The optholmologist said that sometimes astigmatisms just lessen or disappear. So now I just need reading glasses. Will the tint work for reading only glasses. I have problems going into stores and even clinics where the lights are so bright, the reading glasses are useleskk since I spend the time with my sunglasses on. Would the tint also help with computer work? Thanks for any responses. Diane |

I have the FL41 tint on reading-only glasses and I like them very much. Would it be possible for you to have tinted bifocals in which your reading glass prescription was in the bottom half, and the other half had the tint but no prescription?
I'm pretty sure that the glasses I got after cataract surgery are like that.
(I also like to have reading-only tinted glasses as well.) Judith K Modified by judith k at Mon, Feb 06, 2012, 21:59:35 |

My glasses also are post-cataract surgery and no prescription in top and reading script in bottom. Yes, they would help immensely with the computer. They help me in the stores with the lights, watching tv, computer as well as outside. My eyes don't get nearly as tired reading either. It is really interesting to read all of the things they are trying cutting color rays for. I hope you get them and that they help you. Blessings.

I responded to your initial query on the Dystonia Soc's Forum so apologies if some of that is repeated here. I only use my tinted (60% brown tint, not FL41) varifocals when out of the house. I find they reduce the glare sufficiently in shops, but aren't too dark to allow me to read product labels etc. I also use fitover sunglasses over the top of the varifocals when its sunny, windy etc - I don't ever leave the house without those! At home, I don't need a distance prescription, so only use reading glasses. Dependent on the light, or what I'm doing, I use clear over the counter glasses, or, especially on the computer, prescription reading glasses, again with a 60% brown tint. I would suspect that the trouble you're having reading with the varifocals is due to the angle you're holding your head. I find it difficult to read anything of any length with my varifocals for the same reason. As I mentioned in my Dystonia Soc posting, I tried the FL41 tint, but wasn't happy with the orange shade. That seems to be the only shade available here in the UK from Norville. I personally haven't found any difference in reduction of spasm etc between the FL41 or the 60% brown tint. But - we are all different and it sounds a very good idea to get your current glasses tinted to experiment first of all. Good luck with it all - my other advice would be to go armed with as much information as you can gather about FL41 and blepharospasm in general when you visit your optician - as you said earlier, they usually have very little (if any) knowledge about it.
