Hi Just a crazy question, as I have just been diagnosed with this condition can anyone tell me the affects that alcohol has on Blepharspasm/meiges syndrome? Does it make the condition worse or relieve the spasms???? |

Not a crazy question, and it comes up periodically—quite understandably! The answer seems to be: for some people alcohol makes the eyes worse.
For me, it makes no difference. I think the way to go would be to experiment with a small glass of wine, or a small drink, or a little beer—and see the effects that has. Judith K |

I agree with Judith - past chat on this topic seems to show variable results, so just like most things BEB, different from person to person. Just as a related side comment: for BoNT to work, the body needs zinc, which it gets from food or supplements. Alcohol (like soda) contains phosphates, which inhibit zinc take up. So if you are using a zinc supplement like Zytaze, remember the rule that you should not take it within 2 hours of medication or dietary supplement - or it turns out, alcohol or soda. Cheers! (well, not for another hour, I just had my Zytaze :-). Peter |

Actually, it's a good question. Be very careful if you are taking clonazapam or an antidepressant as the warnings are usually to not drink alcohol. So be careful. Diane |

I've had BEB for about a year now. I've noticed on occasion, if I had a few drinks, say at a party, my blinking would just about stop. The downside is, the next day, the blinking would be worse as the alcohol wore off. I also occasionally take a small dose of clonazepam. These two things relax your nervous system temporarily. So far, the botox isn't giving me the relief I need(until they get my dose right),so, if something else can do the job, I'll try it to some extent.(alcohol, that is) Good luck, Mario |

In my case, alcohol definitely shuts down my eyes and the next day they are usually completely shut down ... Although, yesterday I drank a couple margaritas and my eyes are fine, just to make a liar out of me and to say that you never know with this crazy condition !! Andrea |

IMO, margaritas are a cure all! Cheers, Mario |
