Zytaze update

I've just received an update from oCuSoft about Zytaze, which clarifies a few things.

First:
Zytaze no longer requires a prescription. This has been unclear for a while so it's good to get that clarified. Their update says "patients can now purchase it directly at www.zytaze.com or through their health care professional".

Second, they include the following list of tips for taking Zytaze, and I suspect these are important in making it most effective:
* should not be taken with dairy, soft drinks or alcohol
* patients should cease consumption of ALL vitamins, minerals and nutritional supplements while taking Zytaze.
* Patients should not take medication within two hours of taking Zytaze.
* Patients may return to normal diet and routine on the day following their botulinum toxin injections.

....so I wonder how many of us who have tried it got less than the best results because of breaking one or more of the above guidelines? Certainly I've never been completely compliant, so maybe I can get better results in future.

And just to confirm I've no connection with oCuSoft and have no commercial interest in whether they succeed or fail; my concern is that we discuss it here from time to time and have not had the above information before.

Finally if you take vitamins or supplements because of medical advice, I'd check with the doctor before dropping them for the 5 days of taking Zytaze.

Cheers

Peter

Peter, When I have taken Zytaze in the past, I did pretty much follow those directions. I believe that they were in one of our newsletters when Dr. Soparkar talked about the product. At least I think that I remember this type criteria for taking the Zytaze.

Never hurts to put it out there again though, as a reminder. I didn't have Zytaze to take for my injections that I had approximately 3 months ago but I did take zinc and a low dose of phytase for about three days prior to the injections and my injections did not work as well.

I was a bit more diligent with my zinc and phytaze this last round of injections that I got on Wednesday. So we'll see how they do.

I was disappointed in the hefty shipping and handling charges on the website, when ordering zytaze from oCuSoft.

Good information, Peter!

Hi Shirley and Peter,

Thanks for the information.

By the way, as always it was nice seeing you Shirley at the Dystonia Support mtg. last week .

My question is what is Zytaze. And how does it help with injections. The only thing my neurologist has given me prior to injections has been Valium to help me to relax.

How does Zytaze work and why should we be taking it before Botox injection?

Sorry to sound stupid, but I'm sure there are others who have similar questions.
I am having my next set of injections this coming Thursday, January 31st so I'm interested in this information.

Thanks,
Diane in Albuquerque, New Mexico

Hello Diane,

Zytaze is a food supplement (Zinc and Phytase), formulated by Dr. Soparkar for those getting botulinum injections. We've talked about it quite a bit on here and alot of information has come out in the BEBRF newsletters, when it first came out, a few years ago.

I'll just post a link to the website, instead of trying to relay all the information about it.

It's simply a matter of "IF" you are deficient in zinc, this supplement might help the botox to be more effective and last longer. If you are not deficient in zinc, it probably isn't going to make any difference in your injections.

You aren't sounding stupid at all, Diane! There is a FAQ on the zytaze website that gives all the pertinent information.

It was good to see you again also, Diane!

Shirley,

Thanks for the link. Since I'm having injections this Thursday, it obviously to late to consider getting Zytaze, but I will mention it to Dr. Harris and see whether she will give me an RX. Usually, I take Valium to help me relax, but I didn't know that there was Zytaze which would help extend the luv pre if the Botox. That would be great.

Thanks,
Diane

Diane, as Peter mentioned in his post at the top of this thread, a prescription for Zytaze, is no longer required. You can order it from the website or some pharmacies may carry it....but you'd have to call and check ahead of time, to see if they have it or could order it for you.

Shirley,

I just want to check with Dr. Harris before taking it.

If it isn't RX, how expensive is it and have you found it locally or do you order it? I usually get my meds filled at Walgreens. I'll ask them the next time I refill.

Thanks,
Diane

The price is listed on the Zytaze website, under "order".
You can calculate shipping, once you put the item in your cart. You don't have to go ahead and order it when you do this but you will have to in order to find your shipping charges.

I have no idea what pharmacies are charging for it now. It used to run $50 or $60...but now sure what it is now. Most insurances will not cover this, as it is a food supplement.

You can always ask a pharmacy to order it for you...but you might have to pre pay.

Speaking from a different planet, I have tried Zytaze 4 times now and never noticed that it made a difference. Twice I was diligent about the rules for taking it, and twice I was a little sloppy about them. It just didn't make any difference!

Early on, when Zytaze was just beginning to be discussed, I asked my primary care doctor if he would get my zinc level assessed. It was completely normal. So, I suspect that having a normal zinc level to begin with makes the difference. It sure would be nice to find something, ANYTHING, that facilitated the botox effect.

Hi Peter -

I just received a "freebie" of Zytase from Ocusoft and one little eyelid cleaning pad for babies (really liked the pad). They sent me the package because, like you, I am an area rep for a support group. They actually asked me to pass on the good news.

I can't right away because I was just treated a week and a half ago (without Zytase) and it'll be the usual waiting period for the next series. I did take Zinc picolinate (sp?)with no noticable results. One doctor on the BEBRF mag suggested it, so I tried it.

I will try the Zytase when the next series comes up. I do take a lot of vitamins and hate to give them up for five days but this is a scientific experiment so....

Cheers,
Marcia

Peter,

Thanks to the link from Shirley, I will discuss it with my neurologist when I get my next Botox treatmen this Thursday.

One other question, you mentioned that no vitamin or mineral supplements. What about medications such as klonopin or Adderall.

Also, I take Nexium daily which affects the absorption of the Adderall, makes the Adderall break down faster.

How would these meds affect Zytaze? I couldn't go without them so if it were between them and Zytaze, I wouldn't try the Zytaze.

Thanks for any other information.

Diane

The guideline is don't take medication within 2 hours of taking Zytaze.

Peter,

Two hours is doable.
