FL-41 Tint

Hi, does anyone know where I could send my prescription glasses to have the fl-41 tint applied? Axon Optics said they only apply the tint to their own glasses. I'm in New York, but, if I had a place to send them to, it wouldn't be an issue finding a place local. Thanks Mario

ps I did a search on here but nothing came up.

Hi,

There are several places that will tint your glasses. One of them is Moran Eye Center in Salt Lake City (they're connected with the University).
I've had prescription glasses tinted by them a number of times. I've always been pleased with the results
You can use your own glasses, but they shouldn't have a coating (like non-glare coating).

Some labs use a tint that comes out orangey. I don't care for that (find it irritating), though some people like it or it makes no difference to them. The tint Moran uses comes out in various intensities of pink (depending on whether for indoor or outdoor use).

I've read about a new tint in development—I think maybe that's Axon—that is colorless.
If that's already on the market, Moran would probably have it too. (I haven't had them tint glasses for me for at least a year.)
If colorless tint is available only through Axon at present—then I guess there's no choice if you want colorless.

If you search for "Moran" in the archives of this BB, you'll see that will come up in a number of threads.

Email address of manager (at least, as of a year ago):
<Patrick.Shaw@hsc.utah.edu>

Phone number: 801-587-3765.

The times I've had glasses done, beginning in 2005, I was charged $35 for the tint applied to my own glasses. Plus postage, last time I asked.
Wouldn't be surprised if the price has gone up. But for having the tint applied to glasses I already had, $35 seemed very reasonable to me.

Good luck,

Judith K

I recently had glasses made with the FL41 tint which was done at the Moran Eye Center. The charge for the tint is still $35. I bought frames locally (Minnesota) and sent my prescription and the frames and had them make the lenses and tint them. Their prices for the lenses were comparable to what I pay at my eye clinic. They did an excellent job. The reason I had them make the lenses was that I wanted to be sure that the lenses would be what they need so that the tint would turn out well.

I don't know if the colorless coating is available yet, either.
Good luck, I hope you find what you need.
Susi

Hi Susi. I sent an email to Patrick Shaw. I got an auto response that he was out of his office till Mar 25. I haven't heard back from him yet. Is there a web site I could check out or how did you get the info for where to send your glasses to, the payment, etc?

I sent for some FL-41 clip-ons & paid $85.00 for them. They worked fairly well but now I just use regular clip-ons. They did work good at bringing out the color of the Redbuds that bloom down here in southern Ohio in the spring. That's about all they did for me. =---> Jay

Try this email: amy.vass@hsc.utah.edu
Amy Vass is the optician who handles a lot of the work with FL-41. When I emailed Patrick Shaw I waited a long time and then this Amy emailed me and she was a great help. I cannot cope well with phone calls because they trigger my spasms in the worst way. Amy was very understanding and was willing to conduct business via email. I was very satisfied with the service and a local optician told me he was very impressed with my lenses and the tinting.

Good luck!

I'm not in NY, but talked to my Optometrist, and had her order my prescription reading glasses tinted with FL-41. Also had some non-prescription sunglasses tinted with FL-41, darker for TV-wathcing and outdoor use.

Maybe your Opto can have your glasses tinted for you? Be sure to specify the FL-41 tint and its manufacturer.

If you care about whether the tint is more of an orange-y color or a rose
color, ask first what lab they're being sent to.

I like the rose-ish tint applied by Phantom labs (that's what Moran uses).
There's a range of color that varies somewhat with the intensity of the tint: if you get about 30% intensity applied, that's a light rose; if you go for dark (very sunny outdoors, say 75%), it's moving towards a brown, so dark that the color of the tint isn't very obvious.

Both rose and orange tint work, but the shade might matter to some people. After sending glasses to Moran and being happy with the results, my doctor offered to get them tinted (it would take a few days, rather than a few weeks), so I thought I'd try that. At that time, I had no idea FL41 came in anything but rose, and I assumed
new lenses would also be rose. That's when I found out they'd been sent to a lab
that does the orange-y tint.
At first I wasn't happy with them because I didn't care for the color. I tried
them anyway, and found that tint actually irritated my eyes.

Probably a majority don't care about the color, and even might prefer it; and also don't have a problem with irritated eyes due to the shade of the tint. I'm mentioning it, though, because I have met several other patients who had the same experience that I did.

I currently use the Fl41 tint (orange) from BPI ( only one I found in Australia at the time) - works great.

Have contacted Axon Optics re the colourless tint and have received advices that the clearer Next-Generation Tint hopefully will be available later this year. It is currently in clinical trial. The release date depends on the results of the trial.

However if you get your name added to their mailing list you will be advised when the new lenses are available.

regards

Grant in not so sunny Queensland Australia
