TDAP vacine

I am going to Ohio next month to await the birth of my granddaughter. They would like everyone in contact with her to get a TDAP vaccine for whooping cough. Someone told me that people with nervous system issues should not get this. My daughter has left this up to me. I don't think BEB is an issue. Any feedback?

Had the same problem but had not heard of any issue with BEB.
Went ahead and had the injection no problem at all.

Would consider the alternatives of not having the injection:

1. No contact with granddaughter.
2. Even worse spreading whooping cough to an infant with very low immune system.

The risk to the child far outweighs the consequences.

The concerns you may have heard of with existing neurological conditions and pertussis vaccine were very rare events that occurred with the OLD vaccine that contained "whole cell" pertussis. (DPT) The new vaccines are called "acellular pertussis" (DPaT) and do not cause these reactions.

As a pediatrician, I can tell you that pertussis is a very real concern. In adults, it may simply look like a cough that can drag on for weeks without fever or other symptoms. You are most likely to spread it BEFORE the onset of the cough. It is very contagious. You can catch it in any public place. There are outbreaks occurring more frequently these days. In an adult, it is just an extremely annoying cough, and often goes undiagnosed; however, in an infant who has not yet had a chance to get all their immunizations it can make them very very sick and need to be in the ICU on a ventilator.

I have BEB, and I would not hesitate to get this vaccine - in fact I've had the recommended booster without any increased BEB issues.

Good to also have the influenza vaccine if you haven't already - there will still be cases of that going around too.

Best wishes for you and your daughter as you wait the arrival of the new baby!

Jill

Thanks, Jill! So great to have a doctor on the board!!

I had not been aware of the risk with the old shot but I am due for this booster so am glad to know nothing to worry about.
