Shingles medication and the effect on BEB

On 18th February I had surgery to remove a pin in my right foot placed there as a result of a break some 18 months ago.

Two weeks prior to the surgery I developed back pains on the left had side and was referred to a physio for muscles spasm relief. Two days after surgery I was rushed back to ED where CT scan suggested diverticulitis as pain had moved to front left hand side abdomen as well and was very intense. Prescribed two antibiotics. Next week back to ED as pain was unbelievable and was prescribed heavy painkillers as well as Valium to relieve the spasms. Could not touch the front left hand side from the waist down.

Week later developed a slight rash higher up on back and returned to ED. Diagnosis Shingles and was told not diverticulitis and to cease antibiotics - as well the narcotic based painkillers were not helping. The difficulty was the shingles rash took five weeks of intense pain before becoming evident. Rash area was completely pain free - apparently you can develop shingles without ever having the rash visible which makes diagnosis difficult.

Was prescribed Lyrica (pregabalin) an anticonvulsant as well as a short term increase in Vallium to 5mg three times a day for four days. The Lyrica reduces communication to nerves and has been used in shingles. One of the serious side effects I suffered was a low platelet count so had to discontinue taking this medication.

Pain had reduced and I needed to reduce and cease these medications before I developed an addiction problem.

Well BEB while on the drugs was non existent - had no problems at all and had to defer usual Botox injections until I was medication free. BEB came back and I had Botox today one week later than my usual 8 week cycle. Specialist to-day advised that he would not consider these medications as a long term use for BEB due to their serious side effects and the withdrawal problems.

Apparently I will have post-herpetic neuralgia for some time.
Would strongly recommend if you are over 60 that you investigate the shingles vaccination. At the moment it is expensive in Australia but is under consideration to be placed on our health scheme.

regards

Sorry to hear you have been trough ALL of this Grant. I pray you will feel much better soon with the post-herpetic neuraliga.

I didn't get a rash with shingles for a long time either - the worst pain I've experienced (even giving birth was easier!). Both hubby and I got the vaccine - even if it doesn't stop a person from getting shingles again, it's supposed to make it a milder case. We were lucky in that our private health care (which we continued after retiring) covered the cost.

Strange that your BEB was 'non existent whilst on the drugs' - perhaps it's nature's way (God's way I like to think) in allowing you to deal with the other problems at that time. Whatever it was - best wishes and take care.

June in Toronto where, finally, it is 11degC after a super cold, long winter.

My observation is that lots of different shocks to the system cause bleph to go into hiding for a period of time, and your medication might be an example of that. Generally the problem is that it eventually returns, or like your case, the cure may be worse than the disease in the long run.

Sorry about the Shingles. That has to be tough. I've not had them but certainly hear horror stories about the pain.

I've heard others say that their Blepharospasm was much improved or went away, while on narcotic pain medications. I've experienced the same thing when I had my knee replacement surgeries and had to be on pain medication for an extended period of time. I also postponed my Botox injections during this time.

I also don't consider it a viable option for treating BEB. For one, I doubt that it would continue to work, long term....and the multitude of problems that go along with routinely taking narcotics is not worth it.

I've mentioned it several times before , but for any type of herpes virus, whether it be shingles, cold sores, fever blisters, sun blisters, many skin ailmentd or even genital herpes. Add some L- Lysine amino acid ,taken like a vitamin , in pill form, into your diet whenever these problems occur and it will help.
When I feel the itch that comes before a cold sore, or sun blisters around the mouth. I start by taking two or three pills two or three times a day for a few days.
L-Lysine is an amino acid you can get in the same area with vitamins at your store. It has no side affects and you are probably deficient if you get cold sores, or shingles or any herpes type virus.. Most of the best ointments , salves and lip balms for cold sores now put some in. You don't have to take it regularly , but take some when you start having problems. I learned this after suffering cold sores and fever blisters all my life. It's not a cure but sure helps. You may be surprised what some doctors tried years ago for this problem. B
