Hey y'all, I've just been diagnosed with "BEB Primary, Orofacial dyskinesia, & Spasmodic torticollis". I'm seeing the amazing Dr. Jankovic in Houston, and just got my first series of Botox shots this Tuesday, the 26th. I told Dr. J that the pinky finger on my left hand is tingling and somewhat numb, like I've slept on it, and it's been this way for a while - and he didn't seem to think much about it. So I'm wondering... Any of y'all have anything like this? If so, is it possibly related to the cervical dystonia? That would make sense to me. Although if the good doctor isn't worried about it, reckon I don't need to be, either; maybe I just need some massage and/or therapy work. This has, as y'all know all too well, been a stressful time in my life ;-) Thanks!

Hi Sharon, Welcome to the forum! It sounds like you're in good hands for your injections. You just got diagnosed, how long have you been having problems? I don't have a lot of experience with your numb pinky finger question, but I did want to make sure you were welcomed to the forum. Your theory makes sense to me, but I'm just a patient, like you. How long has it been like that? Did you have testing to rule out other causes of either the numbness or the dystonia? If Dr. Jankovic isn't worried about it, it would be nice to know *why* he's not worried, before just ignoring the problem. I had a numb pinky several years ago, and it turned out to be from my sleeping position. My friend is having a numb pinky for a few months now, and hers is caused by MS. As patients, we can't just jump to conclusions, but have to build a good relationship with our doctors and hope they are doing their best for us. Maybe when the Botox kicks in full-strength you will see an improvement in your numbness. Then you would have a good answer to your theory. Of course, sometimes it can take several Botox treatments for your injector tweak the dose and injection placement to achieve your ideal results, so give it several tries before passing judgment. Unless you get your ideal result on the first try, which I hope you do!!! Thanks for joining us!

Thank you so much, Tatia! No, no one had "officially" welcomed me, so I really appreciate your kind comments ;-) I was excited to see message boards on this website, as they're such a great way for people from all over to be able to communicate and share. Nothing like the voice of experience! In answer to your question, I started noticing "something" going on with my eyes in the fall of 2011; at first, I wasn't sure if it was dryness, or light sensitivity, maybe. My ophthalmologist said all was well, and yes, I could benefit from over-the-counter moisturizing drops. I started using them, but things slowly evolved until last fall (2013) I realized my smile looked funny, and my brow was wrinkling in an odd way...I was offered Botox by a local neurologist - with no explanation as to what was going on, just that it might help - so I kept searching. After the first of this year my neck, voice and swallowing became affected so that I really got scared, thinking it might be MS, or Myasthenia Gravis, MD - or, holy cow!! - ALS - and got an initial diagnosis of BEB/Meige in March. However, I wanted a second opinion (as this was all new to me) so I was fortunate to find Dr. Jankovic and get an appointment in July. I am grateful because I feel like he really knows his stuff, and he did say that, while I should see some benefit from the first round of injections, NEXT time it will be even better. That was encouraging! I do wish he'd talked with me a little more about the pinky thing, to say don't worry, or whatever; even though he's done this for years now, it is still a little scary and new to me. Thanks for your thoughts! And, it's five days post-shots...I am seeing some benefit, but yesterday my right eyelid started drooping, so - we'll see. I understand that I can still see changes during these first two weeks - working on staying positive - thanks, too, for your support in that!! Sharon |

Numbness in the pinky finger is usually caused by pressure on a nerve in the neck. (7th cervical) You could ask for a referral to a physio. |

Judy, thank you for your input! I was wondering if it might originate in my cervical area; sometimes I feel a sharp tingling there, and find myself rubbing the back of my neck/top of my spine. And when I bend my elbow in certain ways I can feel the tingle shoot down from there to my hand. Our bodies are so interesting, aren't they? I will look into that! Thanks,

Hi, Sharon. Welcome to the bulletin board! If your eyelid is slightly droopy after the injections, that sounds like ptosis, a side-effect that happens when the botox weakens a muscle that should be keeping your eye open.
How long have you had the tingling and numbness, and does it go on all day or get better after you've been up for awhile? When you said 'feels like I slept on it' I thought right away of carpal tunnel syndrome. I have it, that's why I thought of it—that's exactly what happens: it 'feels like you slept on it' because you have. It gets better after you get up because whatever was being compressed by the narrow tunnel through which the nerve runs, and which is compressed during your sleep, is relieved once you're up and can move your hand. If it doesn't get better, at least mostly, during the day, it's not carpal tunnel.

Hey Judith, Thank you for your welcome, and your thoughtful response - I appreciate it! I've done a little research now, and someone from Baylor finally responded to an email I'd sent via their "MyChart" program - so I understand the ptosis is not uncommon...rats! Guess that means, next time we'll maybe go a little lighter in the dose for my right eye? Dr. Jankovic might have given me more there to start with, as it did seem to be behaving worse than my left eye. It's now two-and-a-half weeks since my shots, and - still drooping, maybe not quite as badly...or else, I'm getting used to it. Trial and error, right? I just find it hard to be patient ;-) As far as the numbness and tingling: I worked for 25 years in an office where most employees were at computers all day (fortunately, my job there was not tied to a desk and computer!) and I saw a lot of folks with carpal tunnel, so that occurred to me, too; however, my symptoms don't go away. They seem to have eased a bit but are still there, so - I don't know. I do appreciate your encouragement to follow up with Dr. Jankovic if they persist. And yes'm, I do have a lot going on...I am feeling challenged, and discouraged, and - honest to Pete, sometimes just depressed. This is the toughest health issue I've had to deal with in my (almost) 60 years, so - I am working on doing, and being, better. I will keep you posted! Thanks!

Hi Sharon,
Two and a half years ago I was diagnosed to have Parkinson disease and soon after that BEB. The first symtom I remember to have was numbness in left pinky finger. It was aroud two years before diagnosis. Later on I noticed stiffness in my left leg and hand. Parkinson+BEB is a rare combination. Do you have any other symptoms? Regards, Vesa |

Hello Vesa, And thank you for your input - I've wondered whether it might not be something more than just the local dystonias. My initial diagnosis was (possible) Myasthenia Gravis, and I also got a blood test for Lyme Disease...but neither tested positive. My first, original issue was with my eyes: it seemed like I was sensitive to light - somewhat - and that I was squinting more. Then it gradually, very slowly, got worse over 2 - 2 1/2 years, until at the beginning of this year it affected my speech & swallowing, my head & neck, as well as my eyes. Then - the pinky numbness/tingling. It has been an interesting adventure. I will keep your story in mind - thanks again for sharing it!
