In 2009 or 2010 I began taking simvastatin (cholesterol medicine). In 2010 I developed spasmodic dysphonia - spasming condition of the voice box. In 2014 I was diagnosed with blepharospasm. I've asked 4 different neurologists as well as my GP about this connection, and all of them tell me that there is no known connection between the cholesterol medicine and the neurological problems. Nevertheless, I can't help but wonder. Its my understanding that the their reasoning is that the cholesterol medicines (particularly Lipitor) are amongst the most well researched drugs produced and no substantive link has ever been found. However, that is a "macro" view of the situation, and is a lot different than, for example, a study of 1,000 patients who have blepharospasm which revealed, again for example only, that 100 of those patients were found to be taking a "statin" drug. I completely understand that I may be totally wrong on my concern, but am wondering if any of you can add any insight? Also, has any research been done on patients with BEB that might shed some light on my concern? If so, where might I look at it? Many thanks, Sean |
